저 詩를 누가 처음 썼는가에 대해서는 설이 분분한 모양이다. 나는 베르톨트 브레히트가 썼다고 알고 있었는데 ("살아남은 자의 슬픔" 에서 봤던 것 같은데 지금 책이 없어서 확인은 못하겠다) 위키를 찾아보니까 (First they came...) 스페인어 문화권에서 그렇게 잘못 알려져있었다고 한다. 원래는 성직자인 Martin Niemöller 의 연설에서 왔다고. 위키의 해당기사 를 보시면 다양한 변형을 보실 수 있는데 표현은 달라지고 단어는 달라지지만 저 詩의 주제는 바뀌지 않죠. 저 詩의 주제는 한마디로:
강건너불이라고 구경만 하고 있다가는 내 집 처마에도 불이 옮겨붙는다 이런 이야깁니다. "정치가들이 다 그렇지 뭐" "나는 정치에는 관심없어" 이러고 있다가 어느 순간에 "어 왜 XXX이 대통령이 되어 있지?" 해봤자 늦었다 이런 이야기죠.
