임을 위한 행진곡

'임을 위한 행진곡' 을 5.18 공식 추모기념곡으로 하려는 모양이다 ( ‘임을 위한 행진곡’제도권으로 진입할 수 있나…5·18 공식 추모곡 지정 논란 ). 나로서는 '임을 위한 행진곡' 을 5.18 공식 기념곡으로 삼는데 아무런 이의가 없고 대단히 환영한다. 그런데 체면을 중시하는 공무원 사회의 성격을 감안하건대 어쨌든 반대할 사람들이 있을 것이라 생각한다. 아마도 반대사유는 노래가 살벌하다든지 투쟁가는 안된다든지 뭐 그런 계통일 것이다. 그러나 이런 살벌한 노래가 기념곡이 되는 것은 역사와 전통이 있는 일이다. 무릇, 역사란 피칠갑이 되어 있고, 피바다에서 솟아오른 명곡들이야말로 그 역사를 기억하기에 가장 적합하기 때문이다. 가령 예를 들어, 미국국가인 "The Star-Spangled Banner" 는 작사가인 프랜시스 스콧 키가, 1812 년 영국과의 전쟁당시, 밤새 퍼부은 포화에도 의연히 펄럭이는 성조기를 보고 영감을 얻어 쓴 시에 곡을 붙인 것이다 (미국은 18 세기에 이미 독립했지만 1812 년 다시 영국과 한차례 전쟁을 하게 된다). 가사의 일부를 보자면

And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

로켓 폭탄 붉은 섬광 등 그야말로 전쟁통이다.

더 살벌한 기념곡의 예를 들자면 바로 프랑스의 국가인 "La Marseillaise" 이다. 프랑스 대혁명 직후 외국군이 프랑스를 침공했을 때 공병대위 루제 드 릴이 작사 작곡한 노래인데 가사가 잔인하기로 유명하다. 가사는 장장 7 절 까지 있는데 위키백과에서 볼 수 있다 (프랑스어, 영어 번역). 가령 1 절에는 아래 귀절이 있다.

사실 우리 조상들이 흘린 피는 결코 프랑스 국민의 조상들이 흘린 피보다 적지 않을테지만, 애시당초 이런 피비린내가 폴폴 나는 국가를 부르면서 자유와 평등을 얻기 위해 걸어온 그 피바다를 항상 상기하는 국민과 하느님이 보우하사 우리나라 만세~ 하는 국가를 부르는 국민하고는 자부심에서 비교가 되질 않는 것이다.

"임을 위한 행진곡" 이 살벌한가. 5.18 은 살벌한 살육전이었다. 그 피바다에서 소중한 민주의 꽃이 싹을 틔웠다. 80년대, 그 피바다속에서 우리는 싸웠고 오늘의 민주주의를 세웠다. 그렇다면 "임을 위한 행진곡" 은 우리의 소중한 기념곡으로 합당치 아니하냐. 우리는 "임을 위한 행진곡" 을 부르면서 우리가 걸어왔던 그 피바다를 기억하고 또 기억하고 또 기억하여야 할 것이 아니겠는가.
